Maksim Plikus Explores the Curiosities of Skin

Skin, the human body’s largest organ, is incredibly complex. Even a simple visual examination of the scalp, face, chest, hands or feet will reveal the subtle differences in skin attributes, depending on the location, which says nothing of what goes on beneath the surface.

This uniquely observable and diverse organ has long been the fascination of Maksim Plikus, Ph.D., UC Irvine (UCI) professor of Developmental and Cell Biology from the Charlie Dunlop School of Biological Sciences. Plikus is developing new ways to help the human body regenerate skin — without scars — by exploring the mechanisms behind tissue repair and stem cell control.
