Research Focuses

Research in the department explores how cells proliferate, differentiate, and assemble into tissues and organs, how disruptions in these processes lead to disease, and how they can be harnessed to promote repair and regeneration. Our faculty work across scales, from molecules to whole organisms, using diverse model systems and innovative experimental approaches. Current research areas include epithelial repair and regeneration, skin cancer, and skin and hair follicle development. Other efforts focus on deciphering the logic of transcription factor binding and enhancer function in developing embryos. Faculty also study long-range intercellular communication, craniofacial development, and dendrite morphogenesis, as well as the regulation of nutrient uptake and Hippo signaling. Together, these programs reveal fundamental principles of development and of diseases such as Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and cancer. Our culture is built on collaboration, mentorship, and inclusion, creating a supportive and intellectually vibrant community committed to developing independent scientists and helping students and faculty exceed their potential.
