“Evidence for inclusive strategies in the classroom and research lab”
Creating an inclusive classroom and research lab is critical for students’ sense of belonging and persistence in STEM fields. There are a multitude of ways to create a supportive learning environment for students. Here, I share my efforts to center equity in scientific literacy and empower students to use their scientific knowledge in recognizing and disrupting societal inequities. Faculty play a major role in how students perceive their courses, and I discuss strategies to connect with students through assignments and curricula. Quality interactions between students and faculty are associated with increased student learning, motivation, and sense of belonging. Building a relationship with students involves both academic and psychosocial support in the classroom and research lab. Lastly, I present evidence that communication of psychosocial support may be improved between faculty and students to foster a more inclusive environment.
