Overview

The Department of Developmental and Cell Biology participates in the joint Graduate Program in Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Biochemistry leading to the Ph.D. degree.

Our labs use molecular biology and genetics to investigate embryonic development, regeneration and fundamental cell biology. Our work employs a variety of model organisms, including yeast, plants, hydra, flies, fish, frogs, salamanders and mice.

A brief description of the program...During the first year, graduate students take courses that cover fundamental concepts in molecular biology, genetics, and biochemistry, and choose three laboratory rotations. Some students elect to come here during the summer before the start of the program, thereby making possible an early, or fourth, rotation. During the first year, there are a series of required core courses, as follows:
    1. Structure and Biosynthesis of Nucleic Acids--required
    2. Structure and Biosynthesis of Proteins--required
    3. Cell Biology--choose from one of two offerings
    4. Regulation of Gene Expression OR Genetics--choose from one of three offerings, including Developmental Genetics

In addition, students often take elective courses during the first two years of graduate study. The electives are typically in the student's area of specialization, and there are over twenty course to choose fromIn the second year, students choose one of eight tracks available in the joint program. Tracks of interest to students in Developmental and Cell Biology include Developmental Biology and Genetics, Cell Biology, Cancer Biology, Gene Expression, and Neurobiology, among others.Graduate students in the Department can also participate in the Medical Scientist Program, which combines clinical training leading to the M.D. degree with research training leading to the Ph.D. degree.
