Applicants should have basic undergraduate level training in biology, physics, and chemistry. Demonstrated skill in laboratory research is strongly advised. Each applicant must complete the Graduate Application for Admission to UCI, and submit two official copies of all postsecondary academic transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and scores of the Graduate Record Examination General Test. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and the Test of Spoken English (TSE) are required of all applicants whose primary language is not English.
Admission decisions are made on the basis of an overall evaluation of an applicant's preparation and potential to complete a rigorous program of advanced study in biology. Particular attention is paid to the applicant's academic experience and motivation. These evaluations are based on the applicant's academic record, Graduate Record Examination scores, prior laboratory research experience, letters of recommendation, a personal statement, and where appropriate, a personal interview.
